Kisawa Sanctuary, Mozambique
Kisawa’s founder, Nina Flohr, is behind the creative direction of this sustainably built resort, designed to have a light touch on the earth and a deep connection to culture and nature. Fusing a celebration of culture with a strong conservation ethic, the eco-conscious retreat aims to bring together wilderness and service amidst 750 acres of forest, beaches and sand dunes on Benguerra Island. . Located in the Bazaruto Archipelago in southern Mozambique, this remote island is surrounded by protected waters known for an abundance of marine species such as whales, turtles, dolphins and the rare dugong. Here, the Kisawa Residence and 12 one-, two-, and three-bedroom bungalows with oceanfront and private pools are joined by two beach clubs, a lagoon-style pool, Barraca beach bar, library, and lounge, as well as a stand-alone spa.
The architecture of the complex is inspired by thatched houses and community buildings of the island and is made using local artisans and materials. These traditions then meet innovation with the implementation of 3D sand printing technology for the production of the building elements of the architecture, which are fused with Mozambican skills in weaving, thatching, carpentry and textiles. The same 3D printing technology is also used to print sand coral reefs and marine habitats for Kisawa’s nonprofit sister organization, the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies. The retreat is expected to be smoothly launched in March 2021.

In total, the lodge has 12 individually designed suites with outdoor terraces. These include a two-bedroom family suite built on two islands connected by a centerpiece of bronze lilies.
The Sussurro Hotel, which will open in January 2021, offers an elegant base on the remote peninsula known as Nhamabue in southern Mozambique. Located on the shores of a turquoise lagoon here, the retreat aims to provide a more meaningful travel experience and a space that aligns you with nature.
