Chef-owner Philip Krajeck’s Rigatoni and Heritage Pork Stew with Tomato and SarVecchio Parmigiano-Reggiano are perhaps the best noodles with meat sauce you’ll ever eat. The handmade pasta at Rolf and Daughters in Nashville is the draw, but everything — from the homemade bread to the pastured chicken — is excellent. Natural wines and craft cocktails with pithy names like None of Your Business (rye, amaro, amaretto, lemon, cinnamon) pair well with the chef’s sharing plates. The atmosphere is laid-back: bar seating and communal tables run down the center of the restaurant, and private tables hug the perimeter. Thanks to a friendly and knowledgeable staff, the service rivals more formal restaurants. It’s no surprise that this restaurant landed third place on Bon Appétit’s 2013 list of America’s Best New Restaurants. Blue Point BBQ

While you won’t find white tablecloths in this cash-only hole-in-the-wall in Pensacola, Florida, you’ll potentially discover one of the best burgers in the state, if not the country. Run by J. Byron Long for nearly 40 years, Blue Dot has been a Pensacola landmark since 1946, churning out sloppy barbecue sauce burgers with no cheese or fries. These are fatty beef patties, most often accompanied by a bag of chips and a soda. The kitchen also serves ribs, but only on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. The limited menu, no-frills decor, and counter seating don’t deter crowds. 7709 Inwood Road

This new Italian restaurant from Shinsei owners Lynae Fearing and Tracy Moore Kathbun is set to open this summer. Taking over the former Fireside Pies space on Inwood Road, Dea (“goddess” in Italian) will serve homemade pastas, pizzas and other traditional dishes.

Darna Market is a new Mediterranean restaurant in Plano’s Legacy West.

A new Mediterranean restaurant, bar and market occupies the former Barnes & Noble space in Legacy West. Darna, which means “Our Home” in Arabic, comes from Yaser Khalaf, owner of Baboush of Uptown Dallas (Yela Concepts). The new restaurant is slated to open this summer with a Turkish coffee bar, full-service bar, deli, and expansive outdoor patio. Diners can expect mezze, souvlaki, meat boards and more. Decor will feature Middle Eastern elements, as well as North African and coastal Mediterranean interiors.

Nick Badovinus is also opening several new concepts in Dallas, including an upscale spot in the Design District.

This summer, prolific chef Nick Badovinus’ new modern and intimate continental cuisine restaurant will also open in the Design District. The new 12-table spot takes over the former Kings Cabaret strip club, but will be revamped for a luxury dining experience.

A new upscale restaurant located in the former location of Abacus (then briefly, Jasper’s Uptown) in the Knox Street neighborhood, Montes is a steakhouse from Refined Hospitality Concepts. Led by Executive Chef Jason Tilmann, the charhouse will focus on steaks and vegetables seared on a Montague grill, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Another concept from Julian Barsotti, this intimate new Italian restaurant and bar will open this summer next to chef Nonna’s popular Italian restaurant in Highland Park. Entering the former Strictly Tabu space, the new spot is a tribute to the jazz bar that was there for 40 years. Bacari Tabu will bring jazz and pizza back to the neighborhood.

The winners of nine of the 10 categories of the 2022 CultureMap Tastemaker Awards are selected by our jury of restaurant industry experts. However, Best New Restaurant is different.

This category gives CultureMap readers the chance to weigh in on their favorites via a head-to-head tournament that pits 16 restaurants against each other until only one remains. The first round of voting runs from May 4-8, followed by second and third rounds from May 9-13 and May 14-18, respectively. Two restaurants will compete for the title from May 19-23.

People can vote once per game per day. The results are closely watched for cheating and other shenanigans, so don’t even try to game the results. Voting is now open.

Whereas our get-togethers offer a wide range of culinary experiences – from fine dining with a Michelin-starred brother to a po’ boy shop like you are – not to mention some of the most talented chefs in town and veteran operators, expect every competition to be tight.

ChòpnBlọk vs. Golfstrømmen
Let’s start this year’s contest with the two tastiest concepts at the Post Market food hall. After starting as a pop-up, ChòpnBlọk has taken Houston by storm with West African dishes like jollof rice and spicy suya steak skewers. The restaurant has garnered enough attention for founder Ope Amosu to appear on celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson’s PBS series No passport required and served as a guest judge on Excellent chef. Golfstrømmen brings together renowned Norwegian chef Christopher Haatuft and Texas chef Paul Qui in a concept focused on serving sustainable seafood: everything from raw oysters to fried whole fish. Even though it’s only been around for a few months, Golfstrømmen stands out among the best seafood establishments in Houston. Both restaurants are worth braving the Post Houston crowds, but only one will make it to the second round.

Chivos vs. Trattoria Sofia
This match pits two of The Heights’ most exciting new options against each other. At Chivos, chef Thomas Bille brings a Mexican American perspective to a diverse set of dishes from pozole dumplings to bone marrow tacos. Veteran restaurateur Ben Berg has brought his elegant flair to Trattoria Sofia’s menu of Italian-inspired tastes that includes freshly made pastas and wood-fired pizzas. Both restaurants offer spacious patios and top-notch cocktails, but only tortillas or focaccia can make it to the second round.

Cantine Da Gama versus Common Bond Brasserie
The latest projects from two successful restaurant groups face off in this game. At Da Gama, chefs Shiva and Rick Di Virgilio apply their winning formula from Oporto Fooding House and Queen Vic Pub to an eclectic menu of Portuguese and Indian-inspired dishes. Common Bond steps up its cuisine at its downtown brasserie with a menu of French-inspired dishes like rack of lamb, bouillabaisse and citrus-poached lobster. Both restaurants offer a clever list of wines by the glass to complement a meal, but only one does the trick.

Le Jardinier vs the neighborhood bistro Gratify
The two most luxurious restaurants in the tournament compete in this match. Le Jardinier brings pedigree from its Michelin-starred location in New York, a spectacular dining room at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Kinder building, and chef Alain Verzeroli’s seasonally-inspired vegetable-based menu. Gratify steps up with owner Grant Cooper’s flair for spectacular dining rooms, crowd-pleasing dishes like raw seafood and steak frites, and an eclectic wine list. Whichever restaurant advances to the second round, both will remain incredibly popular with bold names in Houston.

GJ Tavern vs. Wild Oats
Sorry, Chris Shepherd, but only one of your new restaurants will advance to the second round. After a slow start, the downtown GJ Tavern has taken off under the direction of Chef Tim Reading, who has created a menu built around classic dishes like roast chicken, raw oysters and an utterly mouth-watering burger. Wild Oats is chef Nick Fine’s self-proclaimed “love letter to Texas” who puts his carefully crafted spin on familiar favorites like chili, campechana and chicken fried steak. No matter how low the vote, we’re confident Underbelly Hospitality employees will remain friends.

J-Bar-M Barbecue against Urbe
Could there be a more classic Texan match than barbecue versus tacos? At J-Bar-M, owner John Toomey has assembled a talented team to produce slow-smoked meats and eclectic sides in a setting so unmistakably Texas that Excellent chef filmed his barbecue challenge there. At Urbe, chef Hugo Ortega brings the techniques that won him a James Beard award to an accessible menu of tacos and other familiar dishes. Both restaurants have expansive patios, but only one will fight in round two.

d’Alba Craft Kitchen & Cocktails vs. Daily Gather
Two of Houston’s modern neighborhood restaurants face off in this game. Chez d’Alba, hospitality veteran Daut Elshani and former Benjy’s chef Geoff Hundt have brought vegetable-based Italian-inspired dishes to Garden Oaks. Dish Society founder Aaron Lyons and chef Brandi Key have teamed up to create Daily Gather, a family-run restaurant with an eclectic, globally-inspired menu and stylish interior. Both restaurants have varied menus and plenty of drink options that make them equally appealing for a weekday treat or date night, but only one will participate in the second round.

Winnie against 5Kinokawa
Granted, a lively bar that serves po’boys and an intimate restaurant with a Japanese-inspired tasting menu don’t seem to have much in common, but anyone who’s dined at the two establishments will recognize that they’re united by their creative approach to their respective restaurants. kitchens. Sure, Winnie’s serves up well-executed gumbo and expertly fried shrimp po’ boy, the real fun is found with options like the KFC-inspired Fried Chicken Crunch Wrap Supreme and Taco Bell. Dining at 5Kinokawa feels more like a concert than a dinner party thanks to chef Billy Kin’s engaging personality and freestyle that easily alternates between raw and cooked dishes. A meal to remember or a hangover to forget – only one will make it to the second round.

The two-story Plant City food hall in Providence, Rhode Island is home to several restaurants and bars that all serve purely vegan menus from chef and restaurateur Matthew Kenney. Kenney’s international portfolio of vegan businesses includes a variety of brands, such as pizzeria and wine bar Double Zero, which has a location in this food hall, one in Boston and a handful in other cities.

Try Mexican dishes like chile relleno with earthy poblano chiles and velvety eightlacoche — a delicious corn mushroom — in Besina; a bright and flavorful BLT with fried green tomatoes and shiitake bacon at New Burger; and almond croissants and slices of Snickers cheesecake from the bakery.

Fire-N-Spice vegan restaurant, bakery and juice shop

Originally from Lake City, South Carolina, Patricia Sabree is a Gullah artist who currently operates a colorful and vibrant gallery in the heart of City Market.

His bold and vibrant paintings adorn every inch of the walls of his charming gallery, depicting the happy, country lifestyle of the Gullah people.

Raising Sabree on a family farm with 14 siblings is what first piqued her interest in art.

“Being raised on a farm, you see a lot of different things. You see the textures. You see the beautiful view over the farmland. You get to connect with each other. You get to connect with nature. . . And before you know it, you’re living a life of beauty,” she explained.

She also thanks her parents, especially her mother, for stimulating her creativity.

“My mom, she was an artist in so many different ways. . . My mother loved quilting. She loved decorating the house, and it wasn’t that we had a lot to do, but what little she had, she put it all together and made it work.

Sabree fondly remembers coming home from school and helping her mother make beautiful quilts. His father was good with his hands and could build just about anything.

“So when you have two creative people who are your parents, you become even broader as a person and you are also more cultured,” she added.

Sabree’s paintings transport you to a simpler time, with vivid landscapes where people happily interact with each other and with nature.

“When it comes to Gullah art, when you see the artwork, it’s often depicted around land as well as water,” she explained. In his paintings, you will see people fishing by the river, women carrying baskets of rice on their heads, men plowing fields, and children playing outside, among other things. These scenes invoke serenity, contentment and the joys of life in the Low Country.

She works with acrylic paint and has also found materials to create her evocative scenes.

“I like to incorporate different materials into the landscapes and seascapes that I paint,” she said. “I use different assemblages with my painting. I use rice. I use spanish moss, shells, rhinestones, anything that comes to hand, even beads and stones.

In her most famous piece, which depicts the African deity Yemaya, she used yarn, seashells and pinecones, creating a stunning piece that leaves a lasting impression.

As a Gullah artist, Sabree describes her style as expressionism. She often paints featureless black faces juxtaposed against vibrant backgrounds full of rich colors.

“For the world, most Gullah coins are featureless,” she began, “and the reason why they are featureless [is] number one, you could see yourself in any of the pieces, but number two, the most important reason is that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Thus, it is believed that when you open these eyes, you may open yourself to other worlds and other entities. . . It’s a very sacred thing,” Sabree explained.

A popular subject of his work is also African spirituality, which is an important part of Gullah culture. Sabree feels compelled to portray different deities in her work.

” The ancestors. . . want me to show all facets of Gullah culture through artwork,” she said. “In the Gullah culture, there are over 402 different gods and goddesses. . . they are part of our religion, our spiritual self.

Sabree is currently working on a piece featuring the African god Olokun, inspired by a vision she had one morning.

“I felt like I was going into a trance. And an image . . . appeared in front of me, and it had a glow around it.

She described an image of a strong young man in gold covered in jewelry and surrounded by different kinds of coins.

“He made sure he was very much alive to me . . . and I jumped out of bed and just started drawing, just trying to remember as much as I could . . . I’m painting it right now Sabree said.

Sabree feels a certain responsibility to preserve Gullah culture through her work. She felt called to a higher purpose and that was what motivated her to leave her past as an art teacher in the Carolinas and move to Savannah and open her gallery.

“I was teaching in school, and the second or third year of teaching, my spirit told me that you have to tell your story and you have to paint your story, and what a story to tell. . . growing up on a farm and coming from such a big family,” she said.

While teaching, she set up shop outside the market in Charleston, South Carolina.

She remembers many visitors telling her that she had to go to Savannah.

She finally decided to move out in 2015 after the worst of a series of car accidents.

She heard about City Market from a friend who had invited her to take a walk there with her: “A friend was on her way to Savannah. She wanted to go to City Market because she wanted to drop off jewelry in one of the galleries, and she said, “Come with me.” Sabree was reluctant at first, but eventually went for it. “I realized how beautiful City Market is,” she said. There she met gallery owner and artist Alix Baptiste and he asked Sabree to join the gallery. She filled out the paperwork and soon after she was in the gallery.

Today, she operates the gallery with her daughter Faridah, whom Sabree considers the backbone of the business. Having her support “means everything” to Sabree: “You can’t do it alone, especially in business. You have to have someone there to help you because there are a lot of different hats you have to wear. You must have someone who can help you connect the dots. For Sabree, her daughter is that person. Faridah operates the gallery early in the week, while Sabree is there Wednesday through Sunday.

In addition to beautiful paintings, Sabree’s gallery features detailed handmade dolls and jewelry. Online, she sells other products featuring her designs like umbrellas, aprons, mugs and more. She wants to make an impression through her work while raising public awareness of the Gullah culture: “I want [people] to take away a sense of pride in who you are.
