A west London woman explained that the refugee crisis in the Middle East and Africa continues in the capital with ‘thousands’ still being held in hotels because they have not found social housing. She said that despite Afghan refugees taking center stage recently, many are still staying in Heathrow hotels and have been there for “months”.

At least 4,000 are still using airport hotels, arriving in England with “next to nothing” and having to stay in hotels indefinitely, Tamzin Doggart said.

She says that because it is impossible to find homes for families, many have spent months living in a hotel room shared with their family. Tamzin, who lives near Heathrow, helps asylum seekers access essentials such as clothes and toiletries. Despite the war in Ukraine, Tamzin says refugees in Heathrow hotels come from different places of origin because Ukrainians have a different asylum process than other people like Afghanistan.

Tamzin visits more than half a dozen hotels in the Heathrow area, providing refugees with everything from donated stationery to food. She said: “There are still a lot of refugees in temporary hotels, especially around Heathrow. I look after a lot of them and have a network of people who are trying to help those who get stuck. found in hotels. More recently, we have provided stationery for children and Eid Gift Bags.

The Ukrainian system contrasts with that of other asylum seekers who have to wait to see if their application will be accepted before being accommodated. Ukrainians are allowed to come and start working almost immediately.

She continued: “There is a housing shortage among the refugees and now they are all here, it has become thinner. School places are disputed but most allow asylum seekers, even outside the catchment area, to become students.

“There are even a few hotels that have permanently closed to normal visitors just so they can have a space reserved for refugees.”

Chef Kwame Onwuachi wears a lot of hats these days, more than your average celebrity chef hat. The 32-year-old, who began his restaurant career in DC with Shaw Bijou and Wharf’s short-lived hit Kith and Kin, now lives in Los Angeles. His praised memoir of 2019, Notes from a young black chef, is being made into a feature film starring LaKeith Stanfield. And Onwuachi also dabbles in comedy; his first movie, Sugar, releases on Amazon Prime later this year. He is an executive producer for Food & Wine. He even has his own nail polish line (yes, really).

Now Onwuachi can add a cookbook author to the list. Her first collection of recipes, My America: the recipes of a young black chefreleases Tuesday, May 17. Through its 125 recipes, the cookbook/memory/historical exploration interweaves black culinary traditions with Onwuachi’s own roots in the Bronx, Nigeria, Louisiana and beyond.

Onwuachi will celebrate the book launch in DC this week with a series of events, starting with a chat with Dine Diaspora’s Nina Oduro at Sixth&I on Tuesday, May 17 (tickets start at $18). Then on Wednesday, tickets ($90 per person) for a launch party at Maketto include book-inspired bites, drinks, and a signed copy.

We caught up with Onwuachi to talk about opening and closing his DC restaurants, how he got into the nail polish game, his Harry Potter obsession, and what fame does (and does not) for him.

Your tattoos feature prominently on the cover of the book, as well as inside, and tattoos always tell a story. Tell me about yours.

“I have a time stamp on my hand that says ‘now’. Now is the time to do whatever you want. I have a little reminder for me that says ‘dream’ in my own handwriting. I have the Roman numeral 19 because 2019 was the year my life really changed. Me and [Georgia pit master] Bryan Furman has matching tattoos. And I have a Deathly Hallows tattoo because I’m Harry Potter. Go Gryffindor!

I love the first lines of My America: “Show me an America made of apple pie and hot dogs, baseball and Chevrolets and I won’t recognize it. It’s a foreign land to me. It may be someone’s America, but it’s not mine. What about your America did you want to show the reader?

“When you think about eating as a kid, you don’t ask yourself ‘what nationality is that?’ You just eat food, thinking that’s how everyone eats – until you step out of the house and realize that everyone has their own personal journey with food. This book sums up everything I grew up eating.

In your introduction, you talk about your very first restaurant, Shaw Bijou, and say: “I went to great lengths to tell my own story, the story of my childhood and my travels, expressed in true decadence. The halal chicken and rice I ate growing up became rice crisps with lamb sweetbreads glazed in chicken jus… But it was an autobiography – of a man, me – and looking back on it , it was an autobiography written in a borrowed language.” Why do you think it was difficult to convey your real voice there?

“I think people had made up their minds before the restaurant even opened. Articles have been written about the restaurant talking about the price before people even dine there. I think maybe people weren’t ready for that experience. I think back to it often – I know I cooked amazing food, provided some of the best service, and had an incredible environment. If anyone else opened this restaurant now it would be critically acclaimed – the various rooms, dining room like theatre, telling a personal story. [One critic] said it was like a “cult”, Kwame telling his story. But every leader tells a story.

You write on Kith and Kin [at the Wharf] as a time of exploration and growth, and how opening an Afro-Caribbean fine dining restaurant connected you to your family and their recipes. What did the restaurant represent for you?

“It meant so much to me to put my culture on a plate in a setting like this. Afro-Caribbeans, and most non-European cultures, their food is banned from these mom and pop stores – which are great, I eat there three to four times a week. But being able to celebrate a special experience while celebrating your culture is something I hadn’t seen. I thought it was the most diverse dining room in DC and arguably the country at the time. You saw all walks of life – there were people who could celebrate by eating oxtails, and there were people who had never heard of oxtails, sitting side by side in a real community. I remember the first time I saw the fufu leaving the pass, I cried, because I had never seen our food like this.

Do you have a favorite memory during the four years of running Kith and Kin?

“A young Ethiopian cook came to the restaurant between two services. He told me, ‘I’m not looking for a job. I just want to talk to you. I’ve never had anyone to look up to as a beacon in this industry, which is so shameless himself. Thank you for writing your book, because I covered racism in Michelin star kitchens in DC, and you said it was wrong. All I want to say is thank you. And we sat there and cried together. I was like, ‘I don’t know how to help you, but keep standing up for what you believe in and you’ll be fine in whatever industry you choose.’ But he left the culinary industry, and I don’t blame him.

In My Americain your chapter on vegetables, you write: “Long before kale became a middle-class obsession, it was one of the crucifers that sustained generations of black Americans.” Do you see this book as a recovery or a refocusing of stories around certain ingredients and recipes?

“Definitely. I don’t think you can talk about American cuisine without talking about West African cuisine. So many people were brought here and robbed, and with them came their pain, their culture, their practices and their eating habits. We were the ones running the kitchens, so yeah, I would say it’s about reclaiming, and also re-educating – that’s always been ours.

If you had to pick one recipe for a home cook to really get the flavor out of your book, which one would you recommend?

“I would say jerk chicken. It’s similar to the recipe I served at Kith and Kin. We start by brining the chicken, we make the jerk paste from scratch. When you take the first bite, it’s like people are tasting jerk chicken for the first time, not pot sauce or something thrown on the grill. There are so many shades, and it’s beautiful.

Your final chapter of the book details your departure from New York, and the tone is bittersweet. What would this current, unwritten chapter of Los Angeles look like?

“It’s about getting back to what makes me happy. It’s the LA chapter if I were to write: doing things that make me happy and walking towards my goal. I started acting, building different brands, giving creative direction to different businesses, and really flexing my creative muscle.

What is the impact of all these different activities on you as a chef, and has fame changed you at all?

“No, I think that’s life. Just try things. Tomorrow is not promised today. So it’s always better to do what you want to do. Now is the time to do anything. And I don’t think fame dictates anything I do. I don’t consider myself famous or anything. I’m the same kid who would walk up to the playground and ask someone if they wanted to play. And I will never change. »

Tell me about your nail polish line and where it came from.

“It was four or five years ago in DC, actually. My nieces came to visit and they asked me if I wanted to go with them to get my nails done. I went all black and I was like ‘oh, that fly shit.’ I have worn [nail polish] since then Orly contacted a collaboration and we worked on it for most of the year. I wanted to align myself with things that I really love, things that I really wear, things that really represent who I am. So it’s just another form of self-expression. I think more men should get into it. It’s breathable, so it’s good for the kitchen.

Do you see yourself eventually returning to restaurant kitchens?

“Finally, that’s for sure. When the time is right.

If you could open the restaurant of your dreams, where and what would it be?

“It would be back to DC. I would serve food from my childhood in any capacity. So that means a bunch of different cultures.

What is the next step ?

“The main thing that happens is the family reunion [a four day food festival at the Salamander Resort in Middleburg, Virginia]. When I came on board with Food & Wine, I really wanted to do something different that had never been done before, the Kwame way. And I wanted to do an event that celebrated the contributions of blacks and browns to the food industry. I have been to many food events and we are usually just one of us. We have over 45 chefs and writers and artists, and we have panel discussions, breakout sessions, musical guest performances, comedians. We start with the barbecue. I don’t think you can have a Black event without a barbecue, but instead of your uncle behind the grill, it’s Rodney Scott, Bryan Furman and Virginia Ali throwing half-smokes. We are hosting a Jamaican dance hall night with a lineup of great Caribbean chefs. I think people, for the first time, leave a gastronomic event with full hearts and minds, not just stomachs and livers.

My America has already garnered much praise. What are your hopes for the book and its impact on home cooks and the restaurant world in general?

I think this book should be in every home cook or chef or culinary student or library. Like everyone has The French laundry cookbook, The food laboratoryor The bible of flavors. I think it’s up there because it tells the story of people who are in America and have made it their home. They are also people who help build America, so I think their stories need to be told.

Although it looks like the total stock of international brand hotels in Accra is set to almost double, only 14% of pipeline projects are actively under construction as many have been stalled due to the impact of the pandemic and the Currency devaluation according to the Accra Development Pipeline Report by pan-African real estate data company, Estate Intel.

Trevor Ward- MD W Hospitality Group who Estate Intel spoke to explained, “For the end of 2021, Accra was down 40% on revenue per available room (RevPAR) compared to 2019, this which is not bad compared to Nairobi (50% down) and Johannesburg (65% down in Sandton) Although the market is currently oversupplied, this may be temporary if the oil sector picks up and there are new government initiatives to encourage tourism, just as was done in the year of return. ‘ in 2019.

In a related trend, the office sector remains relatively flat. A large portion (33%) of the development pipeline is on hold, potentially due to the impact of the pandemic on the industry.

Dolapo Omidire, CEO of Estate Intel, said: “Overall, the office sector in Accra has been impacted by the significant layoffs and space reductions that have accompanied the Covid-19 pandemic, which has had an impact on the sector with vacancy rates remaining high at 20% and 25%. in Grade A and B offices respectively. However, leasing activity has started to recover with new entrants expected to return in 2022. However, other sectors such as mid-low end residential seem to be performing better. However, demand remains high in these segments, indicating an attractive opportunity for investors and developers due to the domestic nature of demand in this segment.

Dolapo explained: “Demand in the residential sector is quite nuanced in the market. While occupancy rates remain low in the prime residential segment due to lower demand from expatriates and multinational employees in the context of the pandemic, the mid-low end residential segments continued to record relatively high occupancy rates due to the domestic nature of the demand..”

Regarding the market outlook, Estate Intel indicates that the current macro-economic environment is the main determining factor.

“While Accra is often seen as a soft landing in West Africa due to its supportive economic policies and tourist-friendly tone, recent monetary measures by the national government have dampened investor appetite. This currency devaluation has resulted in challenges that include, but are not limited to, increased construction costs and a slowdown in project financing. However, with the right balance between measures and incentives, market activity could pick up during the year. Dolapo concluded.

Arts Club Sessions
In a former judges’ dining room in the design district of Clerkenwell sits London’s finest new restaurant. That’s the vision of artist Jonny Gent, who counts Tilda Swinton among his collectors, while celebrity chef Florence Knight is behind the menu. As the candlelight flickers beneath the chandeliers and you soak up the charming surroundings of the decaying walls, you’ll feel wonderfully decadent. Chef Chet Sharma serves up chaat and grilled meats that are perfect for sharing in this super-in-demand Indian. In an old Georgian building in Mayfair, the sleek interior is inspired by Rajasthani architecture, with colorful tiled floors, polished mango wood furniture, and a carved ceiling. The team behind popular restaurants The Palomar and The Barbary (which should also be on your list) have transformed what started out as a delivery service into a proper restaurant in Covent Garden. Restaurateur Russell Norman is something of a London institution and his latest Farringdon venture is a tribute to old-school Italian where more is more. BAO noodle shop
In the bustling center of Redchurch Street in Shoreditch, BAO pays homage to Taiwanese beef noodle shops. There is an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs do their work. Hidden underground is a bar and karaoke room if you fancy upping the entertainment.

The Aubrey
This quirky Izakaya sits below the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, next to Hyde Park. Home to London’s first omakase cocktail bar, the menu draws inspiration from classic Edomae sushi, tempura and robata techniques. Served to the soundtrack of Japanese trap music, the space was designed to capture the energy of an evening in Ginza.

Yes, you might be skeptical, but over the years there has been an influx of black restaurants in popular destinations.

If Europe is on your summer bucket list, here are some black/African restaurants you must try.

Paris, France

Paris has a thriving black cultural scene. From an array of black tours to a nightlife filled with Afro-beat DJs, black culture is alive and well in the city of romance. So, of course, food became an integral part of the scene.

BMK-Paris is a well-known afro-chic restaurant in Paris. As well as Jah-Jah, an Afro-vegan restaurant that tantalizes your taste buds with spices and seasonings from different parts of Africa. But if you’re looking for a good old South American flavor, you can find it at Gumbo Yaya.

Gumbo Yaya was founded in 2015 by Lionel Chauvel-Maga. He found his inspiration for the restaurant during his various trips to his aunts in Georgia. Growing up with a mix of French culture from her father and American culture from her mother, her menu options reflect the blending of two cultures. Soul food mixed with French cuisine.

Dublin, Ireland

“A thing or a person that cannot be excluded by darkness” is what is represented by the restaurant “Irawo” meaning star in Yoruba language. This Afro-fusion restaurant blends the flavors and spices of Irish and African cultures. Send your taste buds on a journey of African bean dishes and iconic Irish meats and vegetables.

Edinburgh, Scotland

This Franco-Caribbean restaurant, owned by Buumba Mweetw, offers appetizing savory and freshwater dishes. The menu features a variety of Caribbean specialties such as Jerk Chicken, Almond Coconut Fish and, of course, Fried Plantains. French decadents such as the traditional French cassoulet with Toulouse sausages and blue cheese salad are also on the menu.

Knight’s Kitchen has a lot to offer. Their mostly plant-based menu features homemade soul food derived from traditional Kenyan dishes. This family business operates as a take-out restaurant only. You can order the food in advance and pick it up on your walk around Edinburgh.

Italy

Pizza and pasta are two very good reasons on their own to visit Italy. Between carbonara and pizza, black culture influences the incomparable Italian culinary scene.

One way is through IBRIS, a black-owned pizzeria. The owner, an Italian immigrant Ibrahim Songne came from Burkina Faso and went through a drastic cultural change. This included overcoming culture shock, a speech impediment and the objections of a black man who owns a pizza place. Despite everything, Songne enjoyed culinary success. He created pizzas using local produce with bold flavors such as cream of potato, saffron and chickpeas.

Once you’ve had your pizza fix, you can check out Corey’s Soul Chicken. This well known restaurant is currently between two locations but used to be a popular spot. Corey, from Kentucky, continues the tradition of southern fried chicken with a family recipe of all-American ingredients. If you’re wondering if they’ll reopen on your next trip, you can follow their Facebook page where Corey stays active with restaurant updates.

Madrid, Spain

The capital of Spain has two Ethiopian restaurants. Restaurant Etíope Gonder and Restaurante Etíope Nuria. These restaurants offer authentic Ethiopian cuisine with injera (Ethiopian flatbread) and a range of colorful vegan and vegetarian dishes.

Barcelona, ​​Spain

Spice BCN blends cultures using local produce from Spain and herbs and spices from Africa and the Caribbean. It opened its doors in November 2016 and has fulfilled its mission of making customers feel at home. They aim to help South Africans living or traveling abroad feel at home and to inspire non-South Africans to visit.

Lisbon, Portugal

Djairsound is a restaurant with Cape Verdean flavors accompanied by Portuguese-speaking music. With a 4.5 star rating on Tripadvisor, guests from across Europe have enjoyed their authentic African cuisine and welcoming atmosphere.

The motto of the Gingolé restaurant is: “it’s the flavor that unites us”. It is the flavors of Angola and Portuguese that have made this restaurant a must in Lisbon. A signature dish to try is calulu de peixe, an Angolan fish and vegetable stew.

Amsterdam, Holland

African Kitchen is a restaurant that offers a house specialty of Nigerian starters. As well as offering a mix of West African and international cuisine. This restaurant serves more than food but offers a true hospitable African experience. Some of the specialties include rice and fish dishes, as well as fufu. A stable West African food consisting of paste made from boiled and pounded starches such as pounded plantains, cassava or malanga.

In addition to preserving black culture, these restaurants help break down barriers between cultures. Inviting natives, travelers and tourists to discover and taste aspects of black and African culture.

Kenyan startup TopUp Mama, which provides African restaurants with access to supplies, financial services and business management tools, has closed a $1.7 million seed funding round to accelerate its growth.

Founded by Njavwa Mutambo, Emilie Blauwhoff and Andrew Kibe in 2021, Mom Refill is a one-stop-shop for restaurants in Kenya and Nigeria that provides them with all the necessary supplies, short-term credit and the tools they need to run their business.

Since launching its pre-seed round 10 months ago, the company has grown over 1,000%, signed over 3,000 restaurants and expanded into Nigeria. It has now closed a seed round of US$1.7 million. Led by Ventures Platform and JAM Fund, the round also includes Next Billion Ventures, Future Africa, Jedar Capital, HoaQ Fund, First Check Africa and DFS Lab.

TopUp Mama will use the funds to accelerate its growth, expand its technology and evolve its sales management tools for restaurants.

“I grew up in the restaurant industry in Zambia and know firsthand the power of small businesses to transform lives. That’s why we are passionate about increasing restaurants’ contribution to the country’s GDP. Africa,” said Njavwa Mutambo, CEO of TopUp Mama.

“We believe we have a unique opportunity to build Africa’s most important catering partner and build one of the greatest businesses Africa has ever seen.”

Ventures Platform founder Kola Aina said he was excited about TopUp Mama’s impact in restaurants – “which serve as the heart of neighborhoods in Africa”.

“Topup Mama gives restaurant owners access to affordable food and powerful data analytics to deliver the delicious meals that support and bring us together. Most importantly, they also help restaurants grow their customer base while improving efficiency” , did he declare.
