By the time Comic-Con attendees arrive in San Diego next week, many restaurants in the touristy Gaslamp District will have come up with themed draws — cocktail ice cubes resembling the Bat Signal, for example, or Yoda-shaped sushi. .
With admiration for such bespoke feats of imagination, allow me also to offer some suggestions for Con-goers who focus on a restaurant’s highest callings: great food and a sense of local community.
This is a concise list of personal favorites for tacos, burgers, seafood, coffee and fine dining – the places I would send friends to if they asked me for recommendations in San Diego, where I have traveled frequently over the past decade.
I’m so tempted to send comic book fans who also love food on a journey further afield; I want to invite you to the original location of the TJ Oyster Bar in Bonita for aguachile and garlic shrimp tacos, and up the coast for Eric Bost’s Franco-Californian cuisine at Jeune et Jolie in Karlsbad. But I’m realistic: most of these restaurants are within a few miles of the San Diego Convention Center. The only exception? A fantastic bakery in La Jolla worth visiting for breakfast pastries before the festivities start each day.
