Restaurants in the California Municipality of Carmel-by-the-Sea have rolled out the Verified Clean Air program in an effort to support the local restaurant scene and bring the community together in a post-pandemic world.

It was enabled by Wynd technologies, developer of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered indoor air monitoring and purification technologies, and Bay Area consulting and engineering firm, AirByDesign (ABD).

Digital twin technology

To restore confidence in the safety of indoor dining for customers, workers and residents, the Verified Clean Air program leverages state-of-the-art technologies and techniques. The process begins with an initial assessment by ABD. Digital twin models are developed for each restaurant, followed by the design of customized air quality improvement plans.

From there, Wynd’s suite of exclusive Halo air quality products are installed to actively sense, monitor and purify every space in real time. Equipped with advanced artificial intelligence models, which can identify pollutants in the air, the Halo can dynamically control Wynd Max Hepa-grade air purifiers to keep the air clean.

The initiative was mobilized as part of a collaborative effort between the two companies, local business leader and philanthropist Bill Hayward and Carmel Cares, a voluntary organization dedicated to keeping Carmel “beautiful, safe and inviting”.

Carmel Cares, led by President and “Chief Care Officer” Dale Byrne, has been conducting outreach to business owners in the city to develop an integrated program that supports restaurants in this world-renowned beach destination. Hayward, CEO of the Hayward Healthy Home Initiative, previously worked on implementing Wynd’s air filtration monitoring system at the Sierra Mar Restaurant at the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur.

“As diners begin moving indoors again, the Verified Clean Air initiative assures residents and visitors to Carmel that our restaurants care about the safety of their staff and customers,” Byrne said. “Our restaurant partners were instrumental in developing this unique end-to-end solution, and early adopters are now seeing the benefits of this seamless approach to improving indoor air quality.”

Restaurants sign up for the program, undergo a facility scan, equipment installation, and staff training on how to educate customers on the benefits of the system. Blue window stickers stating: “Verified Clean Air; This company has invested in your health and safety” display to allow customers to identify participating restaurants that use the monitoring and purification system.

To further facilitate visibility of the program and its mission, Wynd and ABD are also providing restaurateurs with personalized QR codes on each table, allowing customers to not only view their menus, but also see for themselves on the web the quality of the air live in the restaurant. Additionally, a grant program has been made available to restaurants that need financial assistance to participate in the program, covering most of the costs for the first year.

“With more than 50 full-service, locally owned and operated restaurants in one square mile, it has more restaurants per capita than any other small town in the country. By extending the application of this technology to major cities and metropolitan areas, the implications are incredible for the recovery of retail and service industries nationwide.

Since the program launched three months ago, participating restaurants in Carmel-by-the-Sea have reported immediate improvements, not only in air quality, but also in customer satisfaction and revenue. This is complemented by reductions in employee turnover and operational expenses related to the pandemic. Data collected by Wynd estimates the cost savings and increased benefits resulting from improved air quality to be more than $17,000 per year on average.

Carmel Cares partners closely with the City of Carmel Public Works Department and other nonprofit organizations to make a positive difference in their community.
