The secretariat of the ninth edition of the Africities Summit has extended the accreditation of hotels to neighboring counties of Kisumu to accommodate more than 8,000 delegates expected in the lakeside city.

The secretariat for the event which kicks off on Tuesday next week said it will also consider facilities in Kakamega, Vihiga and Siaya counties.

Kisumu County Tourism Officer Achie Alai also said the Africities Secretariat has also identified and vetted people operating Airbnbs, homestays and serviced apartments as the city prepares for the first summit to be held in an intermediate city.

“We are running out of space and are now forced to look outside of Kisumu,” she told the inaugural media briefing at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium.

Ms. Alai pointed out that operators and host families registered on Airbnb would increase their capacity to accommodate large numbers of guests.

It comes as Nyanza Regional Commissioner Magu Mutindika assured attendees that security will be tightened for private residents who will be hosting additional guests.

“Neighboring security bosses are involved and the operation will cover every corner of this area to ensure the safety of all guests,” he said yesterday.

The expansion of Kisumu International Airport has boosted preparations for the summit.

To meet the needs of customers flying between Nairobi and Kisumu, Fly Renegade Air Limited last week announced the introduction of return tickets starting at 17,400 shillings.

The Africities shuttle flight package will operate between Kisumu International Airport and Wilson Airport.

As registration for the conference continues, Ms. Alai said, 6,000 delegates had already registered to attend the meeting. To ensure security at the summit, she said, only accredited participants would have access to the site.

The organizers have also reserved the renovated sports ground Jaramogi Oginga Odinga as a place of entertainment.

The flagship pan-African event of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa, held every three years in one of the five regions of Africa, will be the largest event ever organized by Kisumu.

The summit attracts communities and local authorities from African countries as well as financial institutions, civil society groups and development partners at continental and international levels.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathews Owili said the event will feature a separate session for elders from across Africa at Mama Grace Onyango Hall.

“We hope to complete all preparations on Sunday the 15th when local and international exhibitors will be allowed access to their booths,” he said.
