It’s no secret that Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, is familiar with the UAE’s vibrant food scene. From fine dining establishments to burger restaurants, he has been seen supporting many restaurants in the UAE.
Here are a few restaurants where Sheikh Hamdan has been spotted over the years:
11 wood fire
The Crown Prince recently gave his approval to the new 11 Woodfire restaurant which opened earlier this month. After his visit, the restaurant published an article on January 9, documenting the visit. “Thank you for visiting us HH @ faz3, it was our honor and pleasure to serve you,” read the post.
The chic new place is run by chef Akmal Anuar, of renowned 3Fils, Goldfish Sushi & Yakitori. Located in a villa on Jumeirah Beach Road, it “celebrates the earth’s natural bounty and community” with a theme centered around a warming fire. That’s why the menu is full of dishes prepared using various grilling techniques and an array of wood types. Some examples are Wagyu skewers with fresh bread and truffle, Australian T-bone steak, king crab with lemon butter, and sea bass with a salty crust and tamarind.
Drifting hamburger bar
On the site of Expo 2020 in Dubai, the Adrift Burger Bar of celebrity chef David Myers has amassed a whole clientele. In October, Sheikh Hamdan was spotted in the six-month-old pop-up restaurant known for its burgers and shakes.
Adrift Burger Bar was first launched by Myers in California in 2020. Dubai’s new pop-up keeps most of the California menu intact, so patrons can expect dishes like the Adrift burger, the Earth burger and the Good Morning burger, as well as the famous DM burger (a must try, Myers says). Other intriguing dishes include the curry leaf fries and the chocolate miso caramel milkshake.
Cheikh Hamdan stopped by the Parisian hot spot Caviar Kaspia, which opened at DIFC last year.
The restaurant shared a photo of the Crown Prince of Dubai with a caption saying they were “delighted to welcome him” on October 17.
Caviar Kaspia opened in 1927 in Paris and is considered an institution and a celebrity favorite, having hosted Rihanna, Beyonce and Jay-Z, Emily Ratajkowski and the sisters Hadid and Kardashian over the years.
The newly opened Dubai office is a “natural extension of the Parisian space” with a lounge area and a terrace. As the name suggests, many dishes on the menu are loaded with caviar, including eggs, toast, pasta, and the famous Kaspia baked potato.
Celebrity Turkish chef Burak Ozdemir’s restaurant, better known as CznBurak, opened in downtown Dubai in December 2020, and Sheikh Hamdan was among the first to dine there.
Specializing in dishes that harmoniously blend meat, rice, vegetables and spices, all tossed into a huge cauldron, the chef is known to do everything in a truer-than-life way, while looking straight into the camera with a smile ( it has become part of its appeal on social networks).
The restaurant has built a solid reputation over the year, thanks to its hearty cuisine, live presentations from the staff and surprise appearances from the chef himself.
On November 12, Fazza, as he is affectionately known, was photographed at Fika, which opened at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel.
The restaurant posted a photo of the meeting on its Instagram account, saying: “It was a pleasure to welcome His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum (@ faz3) for lunch today.”
Fika, which serves healthy and simple food, is the brainchild of prolific Dubai chef Izu Ani, and this isn’t the first time Sheikh Hamdan has been spotted at an Ani establishment.
Last November, Ani posted a photo of the two together after Sheikh Hamdan visited his Greek restaurant Gaia at DIFC. Sheikh Hamdan was also spotted in Chef’s Izu Brewery and The Lighthouse in the Dubai Design District.
Kabab special Al Ustad
This is something of an institution in the bustling Bur Dubai district. Started by the late Mohammed Ali Ansari, the restaurant is now run by his sons. The walls of this unpretentious space are covered with photos of famous faces who have visited the restaurant and tasted its kababs over the years – from Emirati blogger Khalid Al Ameri and Bollywood actor Salman Khan to Sheikh Hamdan, of course.
After being spotted in Gaia last year, Sheikh Hamdan had locals wondering if he was a fan of Greek cuisine when he was also seen in Ammos at the Rixos Premium Dubai JBR. The restaurant took to Instagram to share a photo of its chef and Sheikh Hamdan at the restaurant, calling it a “great honor.”
In 2014, the food-truck sensation Salt Dubai was started by two Emirati entrepreneurs and created a buzz with its creative #findsalt campaign. Offering a limited but much-loved menu of sliders, shakes, and fries, the Kite Beach hangout has become a favorite of many, including Sheikh Hamdan.
Avli by Tashas
Another Greek restaurant that has received a visit from Sheikh Hamdan, this one is the idea of South African restaurateur Natasha Sideris, who founded the Tashas group. She was pictured alongside Sheikh Hamdan during her visit to Avli at the Four Seasons Hotel Dubai DIFC just days after its launch.
With a menu from chef Hari Nayak, Masti Dubai is known for its reinterpretation of Indian cuisine (think butter chicken pizza and saag paneer lasagna), in a colorful and quirky setting. And he must be doing something right since Sheikh Hamdan visited the establishment in February 2018, according to an article published on La Mer’s Instagram account.
10 BB social dinner
Located at DIFC, this cozy corner is hailed by many as a hidden gem. Created by Alex Stumpf (the chef behind Peyote), the BB offers Middle Eastern and Far Eastern cuisine, including edamame hummus and baos, some of the dishes that Cheikh Hamdan enjoyed during his visit in February of last year.
He must have liked what he tried because he came back later in the year.
It’s a cafe inspired by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, so it’s no surprise when the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai was spotted having a cup of tea with his son. Located in the Emirates Jumeirah Towers, the cafe is known for its organic, healthy bites and spirited staff.
Basta! By David Myers
Courtesy of Chef David Myers, Basta! prides itself on being both a Roman trattoria, a Florentine steakhouse and a Neapolitan pizzeria, and in 2018 it secured itself a sizable customer.
Sheikh Hamdan has been seen at the joint several times, even posing once for a photo with Myers.
Sheikh Hamdan was seen paying homage to another local brand when he stopped by She Burger. Founded by Shaikha Eissa, this laid back restaurant offers a number of hamburgers with quirky names (Gone in 60 seconds or Mad Cow, does that sound like you?).
Last year, Sheikh Hamdan stopped by Nammos, then a recently opened Greek restaurant. The establishment posted a photo of Sheikh Hamdan, alongside Ibrahim Samy, founder of Nammos World (seen in the photo above left) and Mohammad Akif Raza. “We are very honored that His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is visiting us today,” the message read.
