Top 10 Best New Metro Detroit Restaurants in 2022

This week, the Detroit Free Press announced the 10 Best New Restaurants 2022, recognizing restaurants that opened between January 1, 2021 and December 1, 2021. 5, 2021.

The restaurateurs behind this year’s most notable dining establishments are committed to making exceptional meals and delivering great service — but that was just the baseline. They were also community-minded, innovating new ways to meet the needs of the neighborhood or, in some cases, the world at large.

This year’s Top 10 New Restaurants belong to an ambitious category of establishments offering stellar dining concepts with heart.

No. 10: Cilantro Kitchen and Farm, Detroit

At Coriander Kitchen and Farm, farmer Gwen Meyer entrusts chef Alison Heeres with the task of turning farm-fresh ingredients into no-frills comfort food. Heeres, with his relaxed approach, honors Meyer’s craft, using simple flavors that allow the cilantro ingredients to remain front and center. She also relies on Meyer’s herbs to add interest to otherwise mild flavors. Tender strips of lamb shoulder, smoothed with a tangy zhug, share a bowl with lentils and pickled green tomatoes from the farm. The dish is then topped with a generous handful of dill and parsley, heady and barely chopped. There’s nowhere else to enjoy an affordable, farm-fresh meal by the water, surrounded by nature in the heart of the city.

No. 9: Barda, Detroit

With Barda, chef Javier Bardauil introduces Detroit to parilla, a restaurant flanked by fireplaces or wood-burning grills, commonplace in the chef’s native Argentina. Bardauil honors parillas from his country of origin with authentic Argentinian techniques and Latin American flavors. Pink slices of life marbled with pure, buttery fat rest on a bed of herbaceous chimichurri butter. Tira de Asado, or short ribs, are meaty, about the size of a circa 1980s cellphone, and sprinkled with crushed cilantro. Barda, though carving out an identity all its own, takes on a quality that nods to Magnet, the pop-up neo-American restaurant that first occupied the space. Barda is magnetic.

No. 8: Supergeil, Detroit

Super-cool in German, Supergeil is exactly what it says: a super-cool restaurant. As large as the space devoted to art, design and music is – lively tunes echo through the dining room and a small record collection is on display just off the bar – it is even bigger and more bold. Supergeil’s specialty is the Berlin-style doner kebab, once only available locally at Hamtramck’s Balkan House. Lamb, beef and chicken are spectacularly seasoned and cooked on upright rotisseries. The swirling meat is shaved into thin slices, minced and stuffed into triangular pockets of pide, a soft Turkish flatbread. Super cool, right?

#7: Metropolitan Bar and Kitchen, Detroit

Chefs Brendon Edwards and Hailey Enszer bring a fresh take on a century-old West Village stalwart with Metropolitan Variety Store + Bar and Kitchen. The restaurant has a Latin American flair, drawing inspiration primarily from Edwards’ time in Mexico. The baby potatoes are equally crispy, creamy and smooth in a zesty romesco verde, a herbaceous marinade of green peppers, garlic, cilantro, parsley and pumpkin seeds. Veggie tostadas are sweet and savory with saccharin madurosor ripened plantains, and Peruvian Aji Green. There is also a reprieve from the Latin American theme. In fact, Metropolitan might just serve the best Caesar salad in Detroit.

No. 6: Sylvan Table, Lake Sylvan

When you plug Sylvan Table’s address into your GPS, you might end up at McDonald’s. But just beyond the golden arches is Sylvan Table, the rustic barn-turned-restaurant on 5 acres of farmland. Executive Chef Christopher Gadulka takes the farm-to-table concept to new heights, sourcing seasonal ingredients from the restaurant’s lands and nearby growers. Bee Sting Flatbread, a sweet and spicy starter, is perfectly chewy in the center and charred on the edges. Thin slices of salty soppressata are sprinkled with ricotta topped with lemon lemon and thyme. The crown jewel of the dish, however, is the honey drizzled on top. It’s shiny and golden and comes from Sylvan Table’s 12 backyard hives.

Shelby is Detroit’s most popular speakeasy. Coffee Down Under, an underground cafe, is the restaurant’s disguise. The shop’s barista acts as Shelby’s butler. Dressed in casual clothes, the host doesn’t ask if you have any reservations, but rather waits for you to share your name and reservation time, the proverbial secret code giving you access to the blue door at the end of the narrow hallway. Shelby is classy. Heck, part of the dining room is even built into an old bank vault. But his small plates are accessible. Toasted nuts are dressed in a warm spice blend of cumin, chili and fennel seeds; and executive chef Matt Tulpa’s acclaimed charcuterie boards are simple plates of sliced ​​and fermented vegetables, a small selection of locally sourced meat, slices of toast, a dollop of butter and a drizzle of honey.

The Dixboro Project’s triple-concept resort is the only Detroit-area destination that spans the gamut of dining styles. Baobab Fare has expanded Detroit’s kitchen portfolio with a vibrant East African restaurant. It honors the traditional dishes served in Burundi, the birthplace of husband and wife owners Nadia Nijimbere and Hamissi Mamba, and does so with elegance and poise. In most dishes, you have the choice between white rice with coconut or spicy rice pilaf. The question to ask is, what flavor are you ready to incorporate into your experience? Coconut rice, warm and fluffy with nutty notes, creates a resting place between zesty flavors elsewhere on the plate. Pilaf, often a bed for the sauce in savory stews, is aromatic, filling your mouth with aromas of garlic, cumin, curry, and cardamom.
