“We can’t let the month of love pass without mentioning the two South African hotels that made it to the ‘World’s 50 Most Romantic Hotels 2022’ list,” says Sara-Jayne King.

The list was compiled by the global travel site Big 7 Travell, with vote made by its readers.

The local hotels that made it into the top 50 were competing against properties from all over the world, from Finland to Bali.

Entering at No. 33 was the Lodge Lion Sands Ivory in Mpumalanga.

“Ivory Lodge thinks of everything – from your champagne of choice in the maxi bar to a unique dinner under the stars. Guests can also spend a night or two in a luxurious treehouse.”

The hotel is part of a group called The Royal Portfolio and was started by the Biden family. They live in Cape Town… It was the brainchild of Liz Biden who opened their vacation homes as boutique hotels… She just wanted to share all those wonderful things she got the chance having…

After the catastrophic effect of strict lockdowns and international travel restrictions on the tourism industry, where are the bulk of visitors to La Residence coming from at this point?

Krause says that traditionally many of the customers have been international tourists from the US and UK.

“We also received tremendous support from our South African guests.”

Following the recent travel bans, the focus has of course shifted to South Africans, he says.

We now see many newlyweds passing through, especially from the US where their honeymoon has been postponed for a year or two!

Krause tries to distill what creates the special romance at The Residence that attracts so many couples.

The vineyards are so romantic… It’s that feeling of being able to stand on their bedroom balcony looking out at those majestic Franschhoek mountains.

The hotel also organizes privileged private moments, such as a champagne party for a couple in the middle of its vineyards.

It’s not just newlyweds who come to stay – La Résidence is also a popular place for proposals.

… super romantic installations… candles everywhere…
